This election season is surely shaping up to an interesting one. While candidates with the most experience, such as Bill Richardson, have long since dropped out, and radicals, such as Ron Paul, are still running against the odds, the political noise machines of all running for office have been very creative in their advertising. Education journalist and author George Lorenzo has published the first chapter of his book-in-progress (available as a free PDF download), “SurfingThroughNoise: Riding the Online Knowledge Wave.” STN is one-of-a-kind overview of how the Internet and the World Wide Web are radically changing the way we discover and use information. Thanks to a host of noise-silencing innovations, the SAX-40 should be inaudible outside the airport. Designers say the aircraft, which could seat 215 people and has three jet engines, will emit just 63 decibels at takeoff, about as loud as an average conversation. The ‘Silent’ Aircraft Initiative has a bold aim - to develop a conceptual design for an aircraft whose noise would be almost imperceptible outside the perimeter of a daytime urban airport. This requires radically different aircraft and engine designs. Engineers from the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have unveiled a radical design for a “silent aircraft”. The team says any noise from the concept aircraft, known as the SAX-40, would be “imperceptible” beyond the boundaries of an airport. It would also burn far less fuel than conventional planes. In fact, the loudest things about this very special Mitsubishi Evo are its radical paintwork and aggressive looking bodywork. That’s because it runs on electricity. And, under full throttle, only the whirr of electric motors and the tyre noise are audible.
